Concept of the week — Design for Cycles, Not Constant Performance
Calm technology recognizes natural limits, supports recovery, and quietly prepares for what comes next.
In technical terms, the winter solstice represents a threshold condition. A point where input (light) has reached its minimum. From that moment on, recovery does not happen abruptly—but slowly, predictably, and without drama.
Most digital systems are not designed around such thresholds. They assume constant performance. The same interaction cost. The same alerting behavior. The same cognitive demand—regardless of how close users are to overload.
In hospitals, this becomes visible in very concrete ways. Consider nuisance alarms for stable patients that still require rigid interaction flows: Perceive and recognize alarm → Check the patient → Check the alarm source → Acknowledge → Return. Each step may seem trivial, but multiplied across a shift, it creates a significant interaction tax baked directly into the system architecture. The system does not adapt as conditions stabilize; it continues to demand full attention.
Fatigue changes how these systems are experienced. A tired nurse is more likely to miss subtle signs of patient deterioration: a slowly rising respiratory rate that never crosses an alarm threshold, a downward blood pressure trend that spans several hours, a quiet change in mental status noted once and then forgotten amid interruptions. These are not dramatic failures. They are threshold failures—signals detected too late because cognitive load crossed a tipping point.
Now imagine a calm healthcare system explicitly designed for cycles. A system that recognizes when workload density, interruption frequency, or interaction velocity approaches a risk threshold. Instead of escalating demands, it responds gradually—much like the returning light after the solstice. Non-critical alarms are bundled. Stable patients are monitored more autonomously. Task load is redistributed across the team. The system creates a brief recovery window before performance degrades into errors.
This is not about slowing care or replacing human judgment. It is about designing recovery as a functional system state. Systems that support people at their lowest capacity naturally perform better as capacity returns—slowly, reliably, and with far less risk.

Midsummer reminds me to prepare for shorter days mentally, so I’m not surprised when darkness returns quickly after a bright, intense summer. And the shortest day triggers something different: optimism. From that moment on, the days are slowly—almost imperceptibly—getting longer and brighter again.
This shift made me calmer. More aware of cycles. Less reactive to change.
